Parent Schedule
Sessions A, B, C, D, E, F, J, and K

Day One

8-10am

Check-In
Student Activities Building (SAB)
8am Students taking the Russian, German, or Latin placement exams should check in at this time.
8:30 to 10am All students who are not planning to take a Summer Orientation foreign language placement exam should check in at this time.
Students will sign in, have their student ID photos taken, pick up Orientation materials and academic information, and then drop off their belongings in Hereford Residential College. 

Shuttles run from the SAB and
Hereford to Old Cabell and Newcomb Halls from 8 to 11am.

10:30-11:15am

Welcome Address
Old Cabell Hall Auditorium
A representative from the Board of Visitors and the Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Officer will discuss what’s new and what’s enduring at the University of Virginia.  The Director of Orientation and New Student Programs will give a brief overview of the Summer Orientation program.

11:15am-12:30pm

Parents as Partners
Old Cabell Hall Auditorium
A representative from the Office of the Dean of Students and two current students will help parents anticipate the U.Va. student experience, understand how the University interacts with students and parents, and determine how best to support their daughter’s or son's growing independence.

12:30-1:30pm

1:45-2:15pm

Technology at U.Va.
Old Cabell Hall Auditorium
Representatives from the Department of Information Technology and Communication (ITC) will discuss the University’s computing environment and services available to students.  They will answer questions regarding what kind of computer students should bring, what software is needed, issues of general safety and computer security, and where students may obtain help on computer-related matters.  ITC staff will conclude with an opportunity to ask questions.

2:30-3:15pm
 

Money Matters
Old Cabell Hall Auditorium

The Director of Student Financial Services and her staff will speak about financial services and resources available to students and families. In addition to providing information about financial aid, this session will offer strategies for parents to help their students manage their money and make wise financial choices.  This session is recommended for all parents.

3:30-4:30pm

Academic Life at U.Va.
Old Cabell Hall Auditorium
A member of the faculty will speak broadly about how families can best support their students during their transition into this academically rigorous environment.  Parents will have an opportunity to ask questions about the intellectual life on the Grounds.

4:30-5:30pm

Reception for Parents
Old Cabell Hall Lobby
Parents and guests will have the opportunity to mingle with other parents, talk with University representatives, and enjoy light refreshments. Information about optional evening events will be available.

Shuttles will run every 10 minutes between 4:30 and 6pm from Old Cabell Hall to take parents and guests back to their vehicles at the Student Activities Building.

8:30-9:30am

Health and Wellness at U.Va.
Newcomb Hall Ballroom
Parents and guests will learn about the many opportunities, services, and resources available to help students maintain good health while at the University.  A panel of representatives from Student Health and Counseling and Psychological Services will be available to answer questions.

9:45-10:30am

U.Va. Students: Is Everybody Drinking?
Newcomb Hall Ballroom
Do you know what U.Va. students really do on the weekends? Parents and stuent can share their opinions using anonymous, interactive audience response "clickers" (like the ones used on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?) and learn to distinguish fact from myth. Representatives from U.Va.'s Center for Alcohol and Substance Education (CASE) will facilitate the session, discuss University resources and answer audience questions.

Parents’ Hospitality and Resource Center
Newcomb Hall Main Lounge
Parents are encouraged to take a few moments to register their e-mail addresses with the University, learn about ways to get involved through UVaFamilies and meet other parents and University representatives.  The center will remain open until 1 pm as a place for parents and guests to check their e-mail, get something to drink, or read the newspaper.

10am-12:30pm

Academic and Student Services Resource Fair
Newcomb Hall South Meeting Room
Representatives from a variety of offices, including Student Health, the Office of African-American Affairs, the U.Va. Libraries, University Career Services, the Women’s Center, the U.Va. Parents Committee, and the International Studies Office, will provide information about key student support services and answer questions about academic opportunities available for students.

10am-12:30pm
 

University Services Fair
Newcomb Hall Commonwealth Room
Representatives from a variety of business offices, including the Bookstore, Cavalier Advantage, Cavalier Computers, U.Va. Dining Services, the Housing Division, and Information Technology and Communication (ITC) will provide information and answer your questions.

10am-12:30pm Vaccination Clinic
Newcomb Hall Kaleidoscope
Students can complete their immunization requirements by taking advantage of this immunization clinic. Intravene, a Lynchburg, Virginia, company specializing in immunizations, will offer vaccines during this time.
10:30-11:30am

A World of Possibilities: Academic Opportunities at U.Va.
Newcomb Hall Ballroom
The University offers a rich menu of opportunities outside of the academic year and beyond Charlottesville through January Term, Study Abroad, Semester at Sea, Summer Session, the Center for Undergraduate Research, and the University Internship Program. Learn how you can get the most out your of U.Va. experience.

Student Financial Service staffers will answer questions regarding tuition and financial aid, as well as help families sign up for payment plans.

Fraternity and Sorority Life at U.Va.
Newcomb Hall Ballroom

Greek student leaders and assistant deans from the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life will provide an overview of Greek life and answer any questions.

Residence Hall Open House
Students and parents may visit a room in Page House in the McCormick Road Residence Area or in Lile House in the Alderman Road Residence Area.

McIntire School of Commerce (COMM) Information Session for Parents and Students
Rouss and Robertson Halls Room 120 (Sessions A-E)
Rouss and Robertson Halls Room 123 (Sessions F, J and K)
Attendees will learn about the curricula, courses, and the application procedures for students interested in entering the School of Commerce. A formal presentation with begin at 12:30 followed by a question and answer session.

College of Arts and Sciences (CLAS) Information Session for Parents

Parents can learn more about the CLAS curricula from faculty and ask any outstanding questions.

1:30-2:30pm

School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) Information Session for Parents
Mechanical Engineering 205 (Sessions A,C,E, J, & K only)
Parents can learn more about the engineering program from faculty and students, and ask any outstanding questions.

Parents can learn more about the nursing program from faculty and ask any outstanding questions.

School of Architecture (SARC) Information Session for Parents

Parents can learn about the architecture program from the dean and ask any outstanding questions.

2-2:45pm All About the Library
Clemons Library Lobby
Parents ane guests can pick up a free insulated travel mug, and learn about all the exciting things the Library has to offer. A short presentation will be followed by Q & A with a U.Va. librarian.
2-5pm

Please note that check-out will not begin before 2 p.m.

Check-Out
Student Activities Building (SAB)
Parents should drop off their evaluation forms.  Students will turn in keys and evaluation forms, and are encouraged to take a moment to register their cell phone numbers for U.Va. Emergency Alerts text messaging.  In addition, they can pick up their student ID cards. (Note: Turning in keys will avoid a charge on students’ University bill). Students who were not able to have their ID photos taken during Check-In can do so at this time.
