About Orientation

Welcome to the University of Virginia! We are glad that you have chosen to be a part of our community. The University is gearing up to welcome more than 4,000 new students and their family members to Grounds this summer.

Orientation is your chance to learn about the University, ask questions, sign up for classes, get to know your fellow classmates, and begin your adventure as a new student!

Summer Orientation sessions for first-year students last for two days. For transfer students, the sessions are completed in one day. A program for parents and guests runs concurrently with the program for new students.

Additional orientation programming will take place in the fall after you arrive during Move-in Days.

Most Common FAQs

Do all new students have to attend Summer Orientation?

Yes (with the exception of RN to BSN Nursing students). You are expected to attend the appropriate summer session for your school of enrollment. Orientation is where you will learn about the University, ask questions, meet with an academic advisor/faculty member, sign up for classes, and get to know people. You will have the chance to speak with representatives from various offices, including Housing & Residence Life and Dining Services. Additionally, you will take care of many logistical details, such as familiarizing yourself with Grounds and getting your student ID.

When and how will I be able to sign up for a Summer Orientation session?

You will be able to register for Summer Orientation from this website, 72 hours after you have paid your $400 tuition deposit and once you have taken the Responsible Computing Tutorial and activated your UVA email. After you activate your UVA email, you will also be able to take care of all your pre-enrollment requirements such as applying for housing and choosing a dining plan.
