The following schedules for summer 2013 will provide you with a general outline of what is covered in your Orientation program.

Session H Parent/Guest · Wednesday, August 21

Check the Parents section of the website for information on evening activities in the Charlottesville area.

10:00 am – 12:00 pm
3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Check-In · Ern Commons-Alderman Road Residential Area

Pick up Orientation materials while your student signs in and has his/her ID photo taken.

Following Check-In, help your student move directly into his/her assigned housing.

UVAExpress. International students and guests participating in Session H can take advantage of UVAExpress, a free, coordinated bus transportation and hospitality program for international students from Dulles International Airport in Washington, DC and Charlottesville Airport to the University of Virginia on Monday, August 19 and Tuesday August 20, 2013 Make sure to register on the UVAExpress website.

The program is coordinated by the University of Virginia's Office of Engagement. It is financially supported by an U.Va. alumnus in Singapore and the U.Va. Parents Committee.

Welcome Dinner for International Students and Parents · Alumni Hall Ballroom

International first year and transfer students and their families are invited to a casual dinner at Alumni Hall. Hosted by the University’s Office of Engagement, guests will have the opportunity to meet University faculty and staff, key University leaders, new classmates, and their families and student leaders. Please consider public transportation, walking or a taxi. Limited parking is available.  If you would like to attend, please register by Friday, August 16 at:

Join the University’s Dean of Students for a candid discussion of how the University interacts with students and parents, and what you can expect as your student navigates the college experience at U.Va.

Do you know what U.Va. students really do on the weekends? Learn to distinguish fact from myth during an interactive session sponsored by the Gordie Center for Substance Abuse Prevention.

Friday, August 23 Additional Programming Opportunities

Library Tour · Clemons Library

Join us for a walking tour of three of UVA’s 13 libraries. Get a glimpse of some of our 5.2 million books and find out where many students work, study, and create using cutting-edge technology. The tour ends with a visit to the Small Special Collections Library to see a few of our one-of-a-kind items, including a rare example of the first printing of the Declaration of Independence.

Health and Wellness at U.Va. · Newcomb Gallery

Representatives of the Department of Student Health, including Counseling and Psychological Services, will present important information about health services, immunization and insurance requirements, and confidentiality.  Parents will have an opportunity to ask questions at the conclusion of the presentation.

11:30 am – 12:15 pm

Money Matters · Newcomb South Meeting Room

Members of the Student Financial Services team will discuss how to best stay informed about the tuition bill, various payment options offered, using Veteran’s benefits, and other important money matters.  You will also have the opportunity to ask your own specific questions regarding financing an education.
