Sustainability Report Card: Transportation Receives A

Zipcar at U.Va


The University of Virginia and Zipcar, the world's largest car-sharing service, will launch the Zipcar program at U.Va on November 17, 2009. Six self-service Zipcars - three hybrid Honda Insights and three fuel-efficient Honda Civics - will be available for use 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The cars will be located in three locations on Grounds and will be available to all faculty, staff, and students aged 18 and over. Gas, insurance, 180 free miles and roadside assistance are included in low hourly and daily rates.

RideShare Program Expanding

The Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission is expanding its RideShare service area so more people can drive to work together. The commission matches commuters with people who live, work and attend school in Charlottesville, Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Lousia and Nelson County.

5th Annual Kelly Watt Memorial Race

To honor the life and accomplishments of Kelly Watt, The Friends of Kelly Watt Foundation will be hosting the 5th Annual Kelly Watt Open. The race is 2 miles and the proceeds will go to the Kelly Watt Memorial Scholarship Fund, which is awarded annualy to a deserving Albemarle High School student athlete. The race is a way to honor Kelly by running or walking the course where he won his first personal championship. Registration required. More Info...

New Amtrak Service Draws Big Number
on Day One

The first official run of the new Amtrak Virginia service was a big hit in Charlottesville. The first train pulled into Charlottesville at 8:45 AM, leaving northbound just a few minutes later.

More than 60 passengers boarded the new Northeast Regional train Thursday morning in Charlottesville, with more than 80 already on board from the new line's first station in Lynchburg. Read More...

New Partnership Promotes Clean Fuel Vehicles

Governor Timothy M. Kaine today announced as part of his Renew Virginia initiative a partnership with Dominion Virginia Power to install electric vehicle charging stations at certain state rest areas. Occasional Parking Programs


Those who normally bike or walk to their class or workplace, can now purchase Occasional Parking Permits to allow them to use their vehicle when they are unable to bike or walk (i.e. bad weather days, running late, etc.). The program is open to all U.Va faculty, staff, and students other than First Year students.

Parking and Transportation Receives "A" Rating on the 2010 College Sustainability Report Card

The College Sustainability Report Card is designed to identify colleges and universities that are leading by example in their commitment to sustainability. The aim is to provide accessible information for schools to learn from one another's experiences, enabling them to establish more effective sustainability policies.

The University of Virginia was rated as a Campus Sustainability Leader, achieving an overall rating of B-. The Department of Parking and Transportation again received an "A" rating for the second consecutive year.
