Available Vehicles and Services

Minibuses: UTS has 2 minibuses which seat 20-24 people. They are ideal for medium trips for small groups, or for locations which cannot be accessed by a full-sized transit bus. Minis can be equipped for tours (i.e., with P.A. systems), and are both wheelchair lift equipped and air-conditioned. No standees are allowed on these buses.

Transits: The transits comprise the majority of the UTS bus fleet. Most are dedicated to UTS routes during the week, however UTS does have a few available for charter services. Each transit can accommodate around 35 passengers, and are ideal for local- to medium-range trips. Approximately 92% of UTS's current transit fleet is air-conditioned and 77% of the fleet has wheelchair lift capability for our passengers with special needs. Standees are permitted in most locations within Charlottesville city limits (around Grounds and Downtown) for speeds under 35 MPH, thus increasing capacity to 60+ passengers.

Coach: The coach is generally used for long-distance trips with priority given to University Departments. It seats 36 people (no standees allowed) and is equipped with A/C, a restroom, and a wheelchair lift.

On-Site Coordination/Dispatch: UTS supervisors can be made available for on-site dispatch and coordination. This is highly recommended for large-scale events requiring five or more shuttles, and is also available for anyone who requests it.

  • University Transit Service is committed to providing safe, reliable transportation to our charter clients. In order to achieve our goal, we require that there be no smoking or alcoholic beverages permitted aboard our vehicles at any time.
  • Additional clean-up time, if necessary, will be charged the usual $55/hour rate.
  • If a written estimate of costs is required, please make a note of it with your reservation request.
  • When performing charters to restaurants, it is customary for the restaurant to compliment the driver with a meal. Usually the driver eats on the bus or in a separate section of the restaurant. Please keep this in mind when you make arrangements with restaurants so that they will be prepared to feed an extra person.
  • Drivers have the authority to remove passengers from their bus at any time. Displays of inappropriate or threatening behavior that cause an inconvenience to the controller or other clients are just cause for removal.
