McCormick Road Bridge
Dates: 5/20/2013 - TBD
The McCormick Road Bridge will be replaced this summer by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). Since July of 2012, the bridge has been restricted to vehicles weighing less than 8 tons, and thus the University Transit Service has been unable to conduct normal bus operations on University Grounds.
The project to replace the bridge is scheduled to start on May 20, and is expected to be complete by late July. During this time the bridge will be closed to all pedestrian and vehicular traffic. A section of Emmet Street in the bridge vicinity will be closed to traffic the nights of May 21 and 22 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. to perform demolition of the existing bridge structure. The section will be closed during the same hours of another two-night period in mid-June to install the new bridge's beams.
Message boards and detour signs are being posted by VDOT, and U.Va. has established alternate routes for pedestrians during the closure. On Tuesday, May 14, Corman Construction will begin preparation work that requires intermittent lane closures on U.S. 29 Business. Motorists should expect minor delays and drive with caution in the work zone. There will be no impact to traffic on McCormick Road until the May 20 closure.
