University Transit Service: A Guide for New Students

Welcome to the University of Virginia!

The University Transit Service is pleased to welcome you to the University of Virginia. College is a very exciting time of your life and we're happy to provide you with safe and reliable transportation during your stay here. Please review the following guide to familiarize yourself with the transportation network that is available to you at U.Va.

Rider Safety

Safety is our number one priority. The following guidelines have been developed in conjunction with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and the National Highway Transportation Safety Board to ensure you have a safe experience with UTS.

Safety Committee

In order to ensure our drivers are operating the bus in a safe manner, the UTS Safety committee conducts random, secret ride along tests during which drivers are graded on their driving and offered tips for improvement. Drivers also complete monthly clinics to improve their skills.

Cross Behind the Bus
Crossing behind the bus ensures that oncoming traffic can see you when attempting to cross the street.
Stand Behind the Yellow Line
The National Highway Transportation Safety Board mandates that all passengers remain behind the yellow line while riding the bus. This prevents injury in the event of a sudden stop and limits distractions to the driver.
Enter Through the Front Doors
Due to limited visibility a passenger could be left behind or have the doors accidently closed on them while trying to board from the rear doors. Always enter through the front doors.
Remain Seated When Possible
Buses are often subject to rapid changing situations on the road, because of this we ask that if there is a seat available, you please take it. Please offer seats near the front of the bus to the elderly and disabled. Remember not all disabilities are visible.

On most holidays, including Reading Days, Winter Break, and Summer Vacation, UTS operates Holiday Service. Students may refer to the online Service Schedule which is updated on a daily basis.

  Full Service

Time Stops

Time stops are key stops along route that buses will use to stay on schedule. A bus will always leave these stops at the scheduled time even if they arrive early. For example, during Full Service the Inner U-Loop is scheduled to leave the U.Va Chapel at 10:00am. If the bus arrives at 9:57am it will wait 3-minutes before continuing along its route. Time stops are referenced in all route time tables.

Full Service operates Monday-Friday when classes are in session and includes limited Weekend Service. Full Service includes all routes except for the Special Route, with the Northline and U-Loop running on a 10-minute schedule. After 8:00pm the Northline and U-Loop run on a 15-minute schedule until 12:30am.

Holiday Service
Holiday Service operates during the summer and on most U.Va recognized holidays. Features most UTS routes with the Northline and U-Loop running on a 20-minute schedule.

Exam Service
Exam Service operates during the University's examination periods. Exam Service features most UTS routes with the Northline and U-Loop running on a 20-minute schedule.

Extended Late Night Service
Extended Late Night Service operates from 12:30am-2:30am on Fridays and Saturdays. This service features the Northline and Outer U-Loop running on a 20-minute service.
