1. What is different about the 2008/2009 parking permit renewals?
Garage transponders will not automatically be renewed this year. 9 and 10 month employees have the option of paying for the summer months with pre-taxed funds. Please see the renewal form for more information.

2. I lost my renewal letter or did not receive it in the mail. What should I do?
All eligible permit holders should receive their permit renewal letter by May 1, 2008. If you do not receive your letter, or cannot locate your letter, you may still renew online without your letter as long as you are not renewing a garage transponder or a 9 or 10 month appointment permit. To obtain another copy of your renewal letter, you may contact us at 434-924-7231 or stop by the Parking and Transportation Office located at 1101 Millmont Street. The office is open 7:30am-5:00pm, Monday-Friday (please check the Service Schedule for holiday closings).

3. I have a transponder for one of the Health System garages or a zip tag for the Emmet/Ivy Garage. Do I still have to complete the process to renew those permits?
Yes, to continue your parking access, please complete the renewal process either through the mail or in person. Please retain your transponder or zip tag for use in the coming year (you will not be sent a new one) If you do not complete the renewal process, your access to the gates will be turned off in June 2008.

4. I started the online process, but the information listed for me was incorrect. What should I do?
Please contact us by e-mail (parking@virginia.edu) or by phone (434-924-7231) to correct the information. Our office hours are 7:30am-5:00pm, Monday-Friday. Once the information is correct, you may go back through the online process.

5. Are there any special instructions about renewing online?

  • Just like renewing through the mail, all citations linked to your account and permit balances must be paid prior to the permit being mailed. For your convenience, the online process offers an opportunity to pay any citations linked to you.
  • Online, your method of payment must be the same as last year. If you are eligible and would like to change from payment in full to payroll deduction, please renew your permit through the mail or in person. Other methods of payment, including check, cash, Cavalier Advantage, cannot be accepted online.
  • We are not offering online renewal for garage transponders, department permits and most student permits (other than those living in Married Family Housing).

6. What are my payment options?
Parking & Transportation accepts checks (through the mail and in person only), cash (in person only), MasterCard and Visa (online or in person only), and if you are eligible, payroll deduction. The $20 fee for additional vehicle permits must be paid at the time of renewal and may not be payroll deducted. Please reference the chart below to determine if you are eligible for payroll deduction.

Full time employee paid on monthly, semi-monthly, or HRS bi-weekly basis

Eligible for payroll deduction

9-month employees paid on a monthly or semi-monthly basis

Eligible for payroll deduction during the applicable 9 months. Must pay in full for the summer months. New this year, the summer payment can be made with pre-tax funds. Please see renewal form for more information.

Hourly, wage employees, Foundation employees, contract employees (ARA, etc.)

Not eligible for payroll deduction. Must pay in full at the time of renewal.

7. What if I have temporary plates at the time of renewal or get new plates during the course of the permit year?
At the time of renewal, please register the plate of the vehicle you have at that time, even if the plates are temporary. When you have your permanent plates in hand, give us a call to change the plates (434-924-7231) or log onto your online account to update your plates.

8. Where will my 2008/2009 permits be mailed?
Your permits will be sent via U.S. Mail to the address you listed in the online renewal process or the address you provided on your returned renewal form. You may log in to your online account to view your primary address. To change this address, please contact us at 434-924-7231.

9. When will I receive my new permit and when should I start displaying it?
Permits will be mailed by the week of May 19, 2008. Please start displaying the permit immediately. You will not receive a new transponder or zip tag through the mail. Please retain your current transponder or zip tag for use in the new year.

10. What if I don’t need a permit during the summer months?
If you have a Blue/Commuter permit and you do not need it during the summer, you can save yourself the cost of those months and not renew your permit. Since P&T does not cut off sales of Blue/Commuter permits, you may re-purchase a Blue/Commuter permit at any time. P&T does cut off sales to Commuter/Red and Reserved/Green permit so to assure your continued assignment in these lots, you should renew your permit and pay for the summer months.

11. What if I live in Married Family Housing and my contract is about to expire?
If your contract will expire in 3 months or less, you may purchase pro-rated temporary permits. Renewal in this case must be made through the mail or in person only.

12. What if my contract as a House Staff/Intern expires at the end of June?
Please contact the Graduate Medical Education Office at (434) 924-2047 or via e-mail to confirm your parking arrangements through June 30, 2008.

13. What if I terminate my employment at the University or I find other parking accommodations outside the University parking system?
If for any reason you no longer need your parking permit, please return your permits to P&T. To receive any refund you may be due or to stop payroll deductions, P&T must receive the permits back. P&T will pursue continued payment on permits that are not returned.

14. What if I am interested in relocating to another parking lot?
Outside the Health System area, P&T assigns most reserved parking accommodations from waiting lists that are compiled on a first come, first serve basis. Typical wait times range from one to multiple years. Please contact us at 434-924-7231 to be placed on any of our reserved parking waiting lists. Health System employees should call 434-924-5147 for more information regarding assignments.
