Getting to the Polls for Election Day (11/7/2017)

Election Day is on Tuesday, November 7, 2017. Polls are open from 6:00am to 7:00pm. Lines can sometimes be long, so please plan on at least 20 minutes at the polls. Don't forget the required identification to vote. Visit the Virginia Department of Elections online for more information regarding required documents and to find your polling location.

There are multiple transportation options to get to voting locations near Grounds. If your polling location is on the list below, please click on that location to view available options to get to the poll. The polling locations listed below are a 10-20 minute walk from most locations in Central Grounds.

Van Shuttles to U-Hall from the First Year Housing Area

  • On 11/7/2017 from 10:00am - 7:00pm, Safe Ride vans will provide a continuous shuttle between the first year housing area and University Hall (U-Hall). Vans will pick up riders on Leake Drive, one block north of the O-Hill Dining Hall. Please note that Safe Ride vans may not be requested by phone or the mobile app. Vans will only pick-up on Leake Drive and outside of U-Hall.

  • UTS and CAT: Please view the tables below for information on using UTS or CAT to reach nearby polling locations.
  • CAR2Vote: CAR2Vote is an independent, nonpartisan service providing free rides to the polls for voters in Central Virginia. It is an all-volunteer group; the drivers provide rides to all those who request one, and don't ask for whom the rider is voting. Those who need rides in the City, the University of Virginia community, and Albemarle County can sign up online at CAR2Vote.weebly.com or by calling 434-260-1547; volunteers can also sign up with these contacts. CAR2Vote shuttle vehicle will be available without a reservation on Ruppell Drive on 11/7/2017 10:00am-6:30pm.
  • UBike: UVa's bike share program is available to all UVa students, faculty, staff and members of the community. In addition to regular subscription plans, UBike is pleased to offer FREE two-day membership passes for those needing to use UBike to get to the polls. Please email ubike@virginia.edu by November 6th, 2017. if you are interested in obtaining a free pass to vote.
  • Carpooling, Share Your Ride: UVa offers a free, secure, and instant online ride-matching system: Zimride. Students may post available seats in their car to share the ride to the polls.

University Hall Precinct

Walking

University Hall (U-Hall) is about a 20 minute walk from most places on Grounds. U-Hall is about a 10 minute walk from Arts Grounds and other locations near Rugby Road. The Goodwin Bridge provides pedestrian access from this area over Emmet Street to U-Hall.

Biking

U-Hall is approximately 10 minutes from most locations on Grounds via bike. The Goodwin Bridge provides dedicated bike lanes as an alternative to biking on Emmet Street.

UBike: UVa's bike share program is available to all UVa students, faculty, staff and members of the community. In addition to regular subscription plans, UBike is pleased to offer FREE two-day membership passes for those needing to use UBike to get to U-Hall to vote. Please email ubike@virginia.edu by November 6 if you are interested in obtaining a free pass to vote. Just press the "hold" button on the bike before temporarily locking the bike at the polling location.

University Transit Service (UTS)

U-Hall is approximately 12-15 minutes from most locations on Grounds via UTS.

  • Northline: The Northline begins service at 7:30am, providing transportation from Gooch/Dillard, Hereford, Alderman Road Residence area, O-Hill, McCormick Road dorms, and Lambeth to U-Hall. Service is provided along McCormick Road, Emmet Street, and Massie Road. Service is provided every 10 minutes.
  • Central Grounds Shuttle (CGS): The Central Grounds Shuttle begins service at 6:00am, providing transportation from Copeley I/II to U-Hall and from the McCormick Road area to U-Hall. Service is provided every 15 minutes between 6:00am-9:00am and 3:00pm-6:40pm. Service is provided every 30 minutes during all other times.
  • Green Route: The Green Route begins service at 6:00am and provides transportation along Emmet Street to U-Hall. Service is provided every 8-10 minutes between 6:00am-9:30am and 3:00pm-6:30pm. Service is provided every 15 minutes during all other times.

Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT)

  • Route 7: CAT Route 7 begins service at 6:25am and provides transportation from the Downtown Mall, West Main Street, and Emmet Street to U-Hall. The Route 7 bus stop for U-Hall is on Emmet Street, just south of Massie Road at the Goodwin Bridge near Lambeth. Service is provided every 15 minutes.
  • UVa students, faculty, and staff may ride any CAT bus fare-free by scanning their UVa ID. CAT routes will also be fare-free to all riders on Election Day (11/7/2017).

Free parking is available at U-Hall on Election Day (November 7, 2017). Overflow parking is available outside the John Paul Jones Arena.

Venable Elementary School is a 20 minute walk from most places on Grounds, and 10 minutes or less from locations in the Rugby Road area.

Beginning at 7:30am, UTS's Inner U-Loop and Outer U-Loop provide service to Venable Elementary school using nearby stops 14th Street at John Street (#002) and 14th Street at Virginia Avenue (#001). Service is provided every 10 minutes.

Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT)

  • Beginning at 6:45am, CAT's Route 9 provides service to Venable Elementary School via the nearby 10th Street at Grady Avenue stops (Southbound and Northbound). Service runs in each direction every 30-60 minutes.
  • UVa students, faculty, and staff may ride any CAT bus fare-free by scanning their UVa ID. CAT routes will also be fare-free to all riders on Election Day (11/7/2017).

  • CAT's Route 7 begins service at 6:25am and serves Alumni Hall via stops on Emmet Street just south of Sprigg Lane. Service is provided every 15 minutes.
  • UVa students, faculty, and staff may ride any CAT bus fare-free by scanning their UVa ID. CAT routes will also be fare-free to all riders on Election Day (11/7/2017).

Buford Middle School is about a 15-20 minute walk from areas along Jefferson Park Avenue.

Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT): CAT Route 4 provides transportation from the UVa Hospital to stops on Cherry Avenue near Buford Middle School.


Charlottesville Area Transit

Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT) will offer fare-free service on Tuesday, November 7. The free service will give area residents an opportunity to try transit while offering reliable transportation to and from the polls.

UVa students, faculty, and staff can always ride CAT fare-free by scanning their UVa ID.
