The Universidad Católica del Perú
The
Universidad Católica del Perú is a private university founded in 1917. In spite of its relatively short
history, in terms of its contributions to Peruvian and Latin American
culture it rivals the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, the oldest
institution of higher learning in the continental Americas (1551). It
has more than 17,000 students, and faculties of anthropology, art, archaeology,
business administration, chemistry, economics, education, engineering, history, law, literature and linguistics,
mathematics, philosophy, physics, psychology, social services, sociology,
and theology. The Universidad Católica also operates an earthquake
studies center and several engineering research institutions, an environmental
studies institute, an audio-visual center that produces commercial and
educational videos, a theater company that has gained an international
reputation over the last four decades, and a public culture center in
San Isidro, a suburb of Lima. The library of the Universidad Católica
has nearly three-quarters of a million volumes and subscribes to approximately
1,200 international journals.
