Graduate Program Admissions

Guidelines for applicants to both the M.A. and Ph.D. programs are outlined in the Letter to Prospective Students from the Director of Graduate Studies. As a matter of policy, the department does not look favorably upon applicants whose overall GPA is less than 3.20 and who have a combined verbal and quantitative GRE score of less than 1200.

Copies of the Graduate School catalogue and the application form for admission and financial aid may be obtained from the Office of the Dean, 437 Cabell Hall, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA 22901. (A single form serves as an application for both admission and financial aid.) Online applications preferred.

  • Applicants who wish to be considered for financial aid should arrange to have their application (including letters of recommendations and test scores) arrive in Charlottesville no later than December 1, 2006. Financial aid awards are announced in late March or early April.
  • No applications for Fall 2006 admission will be considered after December 1, 2006.
  • The Graduate Record Examination is required for admission. Students who wish financial aid consideration should take the GRE no later than December. Further information about the GRE no later than December. Foreign students who did not attend an American institution (or an institution in a similar English language speaking country) for their BA degree must take the TOEFL examination and obtain a paper score over 600 or a computer score over 250.
