Graduate Program - Financial Aid

Graduate School tuition and fees for the 2004-2005 session are $9200 for Virginia residents, and $20200 for out-of-state residents. We expect the tuition will increase for the 2005-2006 year. The Office of Financial Aid estimates living expenses for an independent graduate student in the Charlottesville area to be approximately $1,200 per month. Graduate dormitory rooms are available for single students, and the University has some low-cost housing for student families. Other facilities are available in the city for both single and married students.

Approximately 70% of entering graduate students receive some form of financial aid. In years 2 thru 4, virtually all continuing students receive aid in the form of grants, teaching or research assistantships. Departmental instructorships, providing aid as well as teaching experience, are available to students after their first year. Information on funding from department can be found here.
