U.Va.’s Eighth President: Teresa Sullivan

Teresa A. Sullivan, a leading scholar in labor force demography and former provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Michigan, took office as the University of Virginia's eighth president on August 1, 2010.

President Sullivan succeeded John T. Casteen III, who stepped down at the conclusion of his 20th year as president. She was elected unanimously in January by the Board of Visitors.

"I am honored by the opportunity to lead this University," she said. "It is one of the truly great public universities in the country. In fact, it is one of the great universities in the world."
