To members of the University community:

December 13, 2010

Earlier this year, Marcus Martin, our interim vice president for diversity and equity, and I discussed how we might create a fitting community tribute to honor the life of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Since then, he and many members of the University and local communities have put together a compelling program of events that will explore Dr. King's extraordinary contributions.

"Community Celebration: Faith in the Future" will include outstanding speakers, academic panel discussions, musical performances, and films. For full details on the activities beginning Jan. 16 and concluding Jan. 27, go to

The theme comes from a line in the inspirational speech Dr. King delivered when he visited the University in 1963: "We must maintain faith in the future."

I hope that you will join Marcus Martin and me for one or more of the events as our community celebrates Dr. King's life, his legacy, and his faith in the future.

We look forward to seeing you then,

Teresa A. Sullivan
