Invitation to participate in MLK Celebration

January 9, 2012

To the University community:

As we begin the new year, I invite you to participate in the 2012 Community MLK Celebration this month. Members of the University and Charlottesville communities will gather to pay tribute to the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and his message of justice, empowerment, equality, and peace.

This year's Community MLK Celebration will include a number of exceptional speakers, performances, films, and engaging discussions. The theme is "Arc of Justice," a reference to Dr. King's often-repeated quote, "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." Many of this year's activities, including the keynote session featuring Harry Belafonte and Julian Bond, will ask us to think about King's vision of a just society as it relates to our world today.

For details on events that will take place between Jan. 15 and Jan. 31, please visit

Please join me and other members of our community for one or more of these extraordinary events as we come together to reflect on Dr. King's beliefs and their implications in our lives and in our society.
