David Prior

February 2, 2012

Dear Colleagues:

I write to share the very sad news that David Prior, chancellor of the University of Virginia's College at Wise, passed away early this morning.

David had served as chancellor since 2005. He was a strong, capable leader with a clear vision for the College and its future. He cared deeply about the success of the College and the people of his community, and he was a respected and much-loved figure throughout Southwest Virginia. He worked hard to build relationships with students, alumni, donors, and elected officials. He was a gifted scientist, scholar, and administrator. But most importantly on this day, we remember that he was a warm, compassionate person whose kindheartedness and good humor touched many lives. He will be dearly missed in the Wise community and in Charlottesville.

This morning I have written to our colleagues in the Wise community to let them know that our thoughts and prayers will be with them on this difficult day, and to extend our condolences to David's wife, Merry Lu, and their children.

Please join me in remembering our friends in Wise on this very sad day for our University family.

Very truly yours,
