Message from President Sullivan Regarding COO Transition

Dear UVa Community Members:

I write to provide information about our search for a new Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer and about interim plans for reporting lines until the search is completed.

Earlier this week, I met with the EVP/COO search committee that was originally convened in the fall of 2010. This committee, which is chaired by Dean Carl Zeithaml, has given me advice about reviewing the pool of candidates they had already compiled.

As the search committee resumes its work, reporting lines will be organized on an interim basis as follows.

Vice presidents who have been reporting to the EVP/ COO (Vice President for Management and Budget Colette Sheehy; Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer Susan Carkeek; and Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Center Ed Howell) will now report to me. University architect David Neuman will also report to me, as will our compliance officers Lori Strauss and Eric Baumgartner. Direct reports and staff in the office of the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer will report to Colette Sheehy. Staff in the EVP/COO office will report to my Chief of Staff Nancy Rivers. Director of Emergency Preparedness Marge Sidebottom and Chief of Police Mike Gibson will report to Special Advisor Leonard Sandridge.

These are interim steps meant to provide a stable, effective reporting structure during a period of transition. We are fortunate to have so many seasoned leaders on our team.

The UVa family has emerged from a period of difficulty this past summer with a heightened sense of our loyalty to each other and our commitment to this University. I am grateful to all of you for your continuing dedication.
