Community MLK Celebration
To the University community: As we begin the new year, I invite you to participate in the 2013 Community MLK Celebration in January and early February. Members of the University and Charlottesville communities will gather to pay tribute to the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and his message of justice, empowerment, equality, and peace.
This year's Community MLK Celebration will include more than twenty events including exceptional speakers, performances, films, and engaging discussions. The theme "From Montgomery to Main" refers to the impact of Dr. King's work here in Charlottesville on our own Main Street. We will come together this year at The Paramount Theater to honor one of our own living legends, Julian Bond, who recently retired from the University after serving on the faculty for two decades.
Please join me and other members of our community as we come together to reflect on Dr. King's principles and their implications in our lives and in our society. For details on events that will take place between January 13 and early February, please visit http://www.virginia.edu/mlk. I hope that you will plan on attending one or more of these events, as we work together to build the just society that Dr. King envisioned for us.
Teresa A. Sullivan,
President Sullivan approved distribution of this message.
