"The Rotunda in Late Afternoon" (22" x 30") was painted for the cover of this report by Robert Stuart. The artist viewed the academical village as landscape and painted the Rotunda from the roof of Alderman Library. The strong shadows in the foreground show a tranquil late afternoon on Thomas Jefferson's Grounds.
Robert Stuart lives in Rockbridge Baths, Virginia. His work is in private and public collections throughout the South, including the Reynolds Gallery in Richmond.
