1.3 Standing Committees
The standing committees of the president, vice presidents, and Faculty Senate offer faculty the opportunity to contribute to the governance of the University.
Presidential Committees
A brief description of each presidential committee is provided in this section of the faculty handbook (Full descriptions are available at: Presidential Committees).
Athletics Advisory Council : Advises with the director of University athletic programs concerning major decisions affecting the administration of the athletic department. Refers to the Board of Visitors policy issues deemed to be appropriate for board action.
Committee on Benefits: Serves in an advisory capacity to the President in matters related to benefits policies and programs for faculty and staff. The Committee studies and makes recommendations regarding benefits policies and programs and proposes an order of priority for any suggested changes.
Calendar Committee : Prepares and recommends the comprehensive academic calendar for the University.
Committee on Commencement and Convocations : Assists with the coordination of Final Exercises and other University convocations.
Subcommittee: Processions: Organizes the logistics for Founder's Day, Finals, and other University ceremonies. Responsibilities include academic processions, sound systems, seating, staging, and safety.
Subcommittee: Public Occasions: Researches and makes recommendations to the president on speakers and other participants in University ceremonies.
Committee on Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action: Advises the president on issues deriving from the University's stated commitment to equal opportunity in education and employment, and on affirmative measures that may be necessary to implement this policy. Recommends policies and procedures that will encourage equality among the University's diverse members. Identifies institutional practices and policies that result in discrimination against women and minorities and recommends measures to eliminate these practices.
Committee on Financial Aid : Formulates policy and manages student financial aid funds. Responsible for formulating student budgets to determine when a student qualifies for aid and for determining what specific financial aid packages should be offered to students.
Committee on Information Technology: Provides guidance, advice, and assistance to the President, the President's Cabinet, and the senior information technology officers on matters affecting information technology and communication, including data, voice, and video. The focus of the Committee shall be on the overall information technology environment at the University and on taking a pro-active, leadership role in shaping University thinking on technology issues.
Libraries Committee : Advises the president and other members of the administration on all matters affecting the University libraries. Acts as a forum for faculty, students, and administration viewpoints.
Master Planning Council : Advises the President and Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, through the Architect for the University, on mid-term and long term physical planning for the University of Virginia. Reviews and comments on the Grounds Plan and Overall Lands Plan as to the best utilization of the existing buildings, landscape, and infrastructure, as well as participate as general stakeholders in the development of precinct/area plans and general infrastructure plans, including those for circulation and parking.
Committee on Names : Recommends names for new or previously unnamed physical structures. Compiles biographies of persons after whom buildings have been named and a list of people after whom buildings might be named.
Committee on Public Art: Advises the President on issues related to the acquisition and placement of works of art in public spaces outside the curated collections of the University. The Committee's jurisdiction covers all exterior areas of the University Grounds.
Radiation Safety Committee : Formulates and recommends policies and procedures to maintain compliance with state and federal regulations and to assure radiological safety for all University personnel and the surrounding community.
Thomas Jefferson Award Committee : Nominates the annual recipient of the Thomas Jefferson Award, awarded at Fall Convocation to a faculty member who has exemplified the principles and ideals of Thomas Jefferson.
Committee on Undergraduate Admissions : Advises the President, the Vice President and Provost, and the Dean of Admissions on matters of Admissions policy or administration.
University of Virginia Press Board of Directors : Authorizes the publication of books by the Press, safeguards the integrity of the press imprint, advises the director of the Press on the publication and distribution of books, and assists with financial matters.
The Virginia Quarterly Review Committee : Nominates to the president candidates for the position of editor. Provides support, supervision, and assistance to the editor. Reports to the president on the general condition of the Quarterly.
Virginia Status of University Students Committee: Oversees the classification of students into categories of Virginians and non-Virginians. Makes recommendations regarding present or proposed regulations and policies concerning Virginia student status. Cooperates with the admissions offices and the Office of Student Financial Services .
Women's Leadership Council : Advises the president on issues of concern to women students, staff, and faculty, with the goal of ensuring that women are included as full and equal partners in all aspects of University life.
