2008 Community Based Undergraduate Research Grant RecipientsThe Office of Community Partnerships and the Center for Undergraduate Excellence are pleased to announce the 2008 recipients of the Community Based Undergraduate Research Grants. Launched in spring 2008, the grants are designed to support student projects that seek to connect public service to academic life through research. Community partners also write letters of support endorsing the proposed research project and explain how the results may affect the organization’s work. Congratulations to the 2008 Community Based Undergraduate Research Grant Recipients: Rhiannon Franck, 3rd year Biomedical Engineering. “A Statistical Analysis of the Medically Underserved in Southwest Virginia.” Community partner: St. Mary’s Health Wagon, Clinchco, Virginia. Laura Harris, 3rd year Political and Social Thought and Biology, and Winta Mehtsun, 1st year Medical Student. “Cervical Cancer Screening in Senegal: Barriers to Care and Diagnostic Effectiveness.” Community Liaison: University of Dakar. Anticipated Partners: Dakar health clinics, Senegalese Ministry of Health. Shokoufeh Dianat, 3rd year Biomedical Engineering. “Assessing Charlottesville’s Urban Farm as a Model for Improving Community Health: A Local Project.” Community Partner: Quality Community Council, Charlottesville, Virginia.
