TNE Common Courses: Message from the Dean on Arts and Sciences November 2003 There is no more powerful example of the liberal arts graduate than the future elementary school teacher. No other graduate must continue to think seriously about so many subjects, so many kinds of knowledge, so many kinds of intellectual skills. The University is reconsidering its Arts & Sciences curriculum with the future school teacher as our standard. We are saying that we will hold ourselves to the same high standard represented by the most knowledgeable primary or secondary educator. We want to exemplify, contemplate, and share knowledge that is as broad, diverse, and intense as that suggested under ambitious headings such as "World History," "World Literature," and "The Scientific Method." The Common Courses funded by the "Teachers for a New Era" grant represent our model for this kind of knowledge. In each course a team of faculty from a variety of disciplines will demonstrate a combination of breadth and rigor atypical of more specialized courses within single subject areas. These investigations are part of our continuing efforts under the grant to work with our colleagues in the Curry School of Education towards producing the best prepared teachers for America's schools. We are eager to hear from faculty, students, and others about these courses. Faculty interested in proposing TNE Common Courses--which are associated with substantial stipends to support their preparation--should contact me at ela@virginia.edu. Students and others interested in the courses should contact the Director of the University's "Teachers for a New Era" programs, Victor Luftig, at VL4N@virginia.edu. The first TNE Common Course, "Designing Matter," led by Professor Cassandra Fraser, is being offered in Spring 2004. |
