| Time series analysis can be used to analyze the repeated measures of a single
case, for instance mood in an individual or the behavior of a dyad. It can be
a valuable approach if one wishes to study the nature of psychological
processes, which by definition take place at the level of the individual. In
this presentation I focus on two applications of time series analysis to
psychological data. In the first application the behavior of 124 married
couples who were observed in the laboratory during a conflict is analyzed. A
number of threshold autoregressive models are used, which represent different
forms of influence of the spouses on each other. These models are compared to
a null-model, in which spouses are not influenced by each other. The second
application consists of daily mood recordings of 3 bipolar patients and 11
healthy controls. Bipolar disorder is characterized by extreme fluctuations in
mood and energy, and has been related to a dysfunctional Behavioral Approach
System. By considering a number of different time series models, the nature of
this dysfunctionality can be further investigated. In both applications I
emphasize the substantive interpretation of the model, but also focus on
estimation and model selection issues. |
