Admissions Process

To apply for admission to the graduate program in Psychology, you should:

  1. Submit an on-line application on or before December 1;
  2. Send your supporting documents (GRE scores, TOEFL score, official transcripts, 3 letters of recommendation) in one envelope or request to have them sent directly to UVA. Your supporting documents should arrive at UVA no later than mid-December.

Your application will be considered complete when the following is received:

  1. 3-page on-line Application Form with an attached statement of purpose.
  2. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Verbal, Quantitative and Analytical Aptitude test scores must be taken. The Subject test is not required for admission. The applicant is responsible for arranging to have the Educational Testing Service send his/her scores directly to UVA using the UVA code number 5820. A student's background is taken into account, and several of the Department's most successful graduate students have had relatively little formal psychology training before applying.
  3. TOEFL scores: If your first language is not English the TOEFL test is required.
  4. One copy of official transcripts of your entire college/university record. Submit in sealed envelopes or your college/university Registrar can send them directly to UVA at the address below.
  5. Three letters of recommendation. The University of Virginia now accepts online recommendation letters. When completing the online application, indicate if you would like to use the online recommendation option by selecting "Yes" in the Recommendation section. If you select "No", return your letters of recommendation in separate sealed envelopes with the recommender's signature over the sealed flap. You may send more than 3 letters. If your recommenders prefer to send their letters directly to UVA, please have them send it to the address below. You should offer our letter of recommendation form to recommenders to compose their letters:
