Short Bio

Filip Loncke graduated in 1990 from the University of Brussels (Belgium) with a Ph.D. in Neurolinguistics. Most of his publications and his research interests are related to atypical communication and language, especially communication processes by individuals with no functional speech.

Current research focuses on (1) psycholinguistic and cognitive processes underlying the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication, including the use of AAC in (a) individuals with developmental challenges, (b) individuals with aphasia, (c) simulations in a non-disabled population, (2) the interaction of mental representations, social routines, and basic communicative functions in prelinguistic communicators, (3) the development of a taxonomy of AAC-based clinical and educational activities.

 

Responsibilities

  • Teaching: Psycholinguistics (PSYC 411) and Language Development (PSYC 855).
    Within the Communication Disorders Program of UVA, I teach Language disorders I and Language disorders II (EDHS 809, EDHS 810), and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (EDHS 802).
    Research: I direct a research lab that is focused on non-speech communication.
