PSYC 250: Child Psychology

Description of course contents: This course provides an introduction to psychological development from birth through adolescence. The nature of changes during infancy, childhood, and adolescence, as well as the methods of study and theorizing about development are discussed.

PSYC 401: Psychology of Adolescent Romance and Sexuality

Description of course contents: This course is designed to provide an advanced overview of theories and research related to sexuality and intimate relationships during childhood and adolescence. It has an empirical and psychological focus, which means that we will learn about youth sexual development primarily from scientific research collected by methods commonly used in various areas of psychological science. Students will be encouraged to think critically about the research we discuss, as well as about its implications. It is not my interest or intention to persuade you in any way to view these matters from a particular perspective, only to raise issues for you to consider.

PSYC 403 Misconceptions and Controversies About Human Sexuality

Prerequisites:

Description of course contents: This class will explore the psychological research on human sexuality. Special attention will be devoted to the misconceptions (i.e., different methods used to induce pregnancy) and controversies (i.e., Is sexual orientation genetic or a life-style choice?) about human sexuality. Students will be expected to use what they have learned from their research methods class to evaluate reports and research on human sexuality.

Format: Seminar

Papers or projects: One final paper, several smaller papers, and short reading responses will be assigned throughout the semester.

PSYC 405 Theories in Psychotherapy

Prerequisites: 240 and PSYC 341, or instructor permission

Description of course contents: This is a seminar class designed to provide an introduction to the many theoretical orientations in psychotherapy. The heart of the course will focus on the theories that practicing clinicians and scientists use to inform their work, and we will integrate into our studies a number of topics of special importance to the field of clinical psychology, including ethics, cultural diversity, empirically-supported treatments, and processes underlying client change and outcomes.

PSYC 411: Psycholinguistics

Description of course contents: This course will discuss how linguistic models help us to understand the psychology of language. We will focus on the emergence of language in children, acquisition and development of language, language disorders and neurolinguistics, sociolinguistics, and bilingualism.
