First Year Coin Drop Competition
Monday, Sept. 23, to Sunday, Sept. 29
All first-year dorms will be competing in a coin drop fundraiser to raise money for Hoos Pantry—a UVA organization whose initiative is to meet the needs of financially burdened students by creating a food bank directly accessible to them. The winner will present the check to the organization and will receive proclamation in the Cavalier Daily with a banner to hang on his or her dormitory building.
Research in Action
Tuesday, Sept. 24, 3 to 5 p.m.
South Meeting Room, Newcomb Hall
What is the efficacy of point-of-use water treatment in South Africa? How does social enetrepreneurship support the development of women in La Paz, Bolivia? How are community health funds in rural Tanzania best structured to provide financially sustainable health care coverage?
These are just a few of the impressive student research projects conducted this summer. Find out how you can contribute to research on Grounds at Research in Action.
At Research in Action, students will have the opportunity to engage in facilitated discussions about exciting past and future research in local and global contexts. Topical discussions will focus on a broad swath of social science and biomedical research, like social entrepreneurship, water quality, the built environment, and mHealth and social networking, among others. Past recipients and representatives from major student research funders on Grounds including—Jefferson Public Citizens, Harrison Undergraduate Research, and the UVa Center for Global Health—will also be present to discuss their application processes and answer questions.
All students, regardless of research background, are encouraged to attend.
Day of Service (open to students, parents, and faculty)
Saturday, Sept. 28, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
All participants meet at the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC)
Day of Service is a unique opportunity to engage not only students, but their parents as well as faculty members in all disciplines at the University of Virginia. Participating organizations include: Martha Jefferson House, HOPE, Charlottesville Parks and Rec, City Schoolyard Garden, the SPCA, and Live Arts.
