When is course enrollment for the fall semester? Back to top

Graduate students (except Law, Darden, and Medicine) can enroll in fall 2008 courses beginning Monday, March 31, and are recommended to enroll prior to mid July when tuition bills are produced.
Undergraduate students can enroll beginning on the date and time stated on their advising access code card or provided by their advisory.

When will my grades be posted? Back to top

Grades are due to UREG (Office of the University Registrar) 48 hours after the final examination. If your grade is not posted, please contact your professor. UREG posts grades daily.

How do I submit my grades via Instructional Toolkit? Back to top

See Instructional Toolkit for help. Instructors may submit grades only for those students listed on the grade sheets. If you have any additional students for whom you want to submit grades, you need to submit those students' grades through the normal paper channel (official grade sheet or Grade Change Form). Sign your name on the Grade Verification Sheet and send pre-printed grade sheet to UREG (Office of the University Registrar).

What is Final Registration? Back to top

Beginning Monday, August 18 - Friday, August 29, students who do not have any type of registration block* and who are enrolled in one or more credits will be automatically 'final registered' by the University each evening (i.e. their registration status will be set to 'H' [here]). (Law, Medicine and Darden students will be checked for any registration block*).

When are degrees conferred in May? Back to top

Final exercises are Sunday, May 18, but degrees are conferred when all grades are posted (TBA).

To claim your diploma, bring a photo I.D. to UREG during regular business hours. If you wish to have someone pick up your diploma for you, that person must bring a letter including your CMS I.D. number and signature giving them permission to claim your diploma. Diplomas can also be mailed upon payment of a mailing fee.

To request that your diploma be mailed:

If you cannot pick up your diploma in person, you can have it mailed to you by completing the mailing form and sending it to us with payment (sorry, we are unable to accept e-mail or faxed orders).

Please allow two weeks for delivery.
The fee is $9 for U.S. addresses or $19 for international addresses; make checks payable to University of Virginia. (Note: the mailing fee is not charged to May graduates who are in a College Distinguished Majors or Honors program, or to Graduate Commerce E&Y students.)
Bring the form and payment to the Office of the University Registrar in Carruthers Hall, or mail to:

How do I connect to ISIS? Back to top

Connect on-line to ISIS Online and log-in using your student or faculty I.D. number and nine-character password.

When can I enroll? Back to top

Access to the course enrollment functions within ISIS is given according to the schedule shown in the registration instructions. Final registration is available during a two week period at the start of each fall and spring semesters. Summer course enrollment is available from April 29, through the first day of a particular course.

How can I find out if a class is full? Back to top

Check the on-line Course Listings. The course data and enrollment figures displayed on this system are updated three times a day, but remember that when you try to add a course ISIS checks for an opening at that very instant and courses that appear open in the listings may be full by the time you try to add. If you try to add a full course, ISIS will return a list of other sections of the same course that have space available (if any exist).

Why can’t I connect? What does the message “Your Browser is Unable to Maintain a Successful Connection to ISIS” mean? Back to top

Every time you change functions within ISIS, the system has to re-establish your identity, and if anything happens to corrupt or interfere with the little packet of identifying information that is passed back and forth, ISIS can 'lose track' of who you are. Connection problems can be exacerbated when ISIS is particularly busy, but the problem is usually one of failing to make a good connection and never because there is anything wrong with your ISIS record. Sometimes trying again later works, other times you may need to try a different computer or network location. If you get this error, try these suggestions:

  • don't block pop-up windows in your browser; ISIS must open a secondary window in which you log in and conduct your session
  • use version 5.0 or higher of Internet Explorer or version 7.0 or higher of Netscape
  • don't use a bookmark of the ISIS log-in page, but connect from a link or directly at the http://www.virginia.edu/isis URL
  • use your mouse to click from one function to another instead of the enter key
  • have Java enabled
  • try again later—the problem can be exacerbated in periods of high use

What are dependent courses? Back to top

Dependent courses are those courses (usually labs or discussions) which can be added only after you have added the primary course. Dependent courses are labeled in the course listings.

What are the hours of operation for ISIS? Back to top

ISIS is available from approximately 7:00 A.M. to 1:00 A.M., Monday through Friday, and from 8:00 A.M. to 7:15 P.M. on Saturday; 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 A.M. on Sunday. On certain days (primarily during the grading period at the end of the semester) it may be necessary to close ISIS as early as 5:00 P.M.

How do I get a course description prior to 2001-2002? Back to top

For course descriptions or other information from an Undergraduate or Graduate Record prior to 2001-2002, please e-mail registrar@virginia.edu. For course descriptions of courses taken through a regional center of the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, please contact that center directly.
