Course restrictions are used to restrict enrollment in your course to certain groups of students. The restrictions must be entered into ISIS by someone on your departmental staff with access to the CRT function of ISIS. Your course can be restricted using the following criteria:

  • Academic Level: based on the total number of completed credits, including transfer and AP credits. Academic level one equals 0-29 credits, level two equals 30-59 credits, level three equals 60-89 credits, and level four equals 90 or more credits. (There are other academic levels for special and graduate students, but they are not usually used for course restrictions.)
  • School of Enrollment: CLAS, NURS, LAW, etc.
  • Major/Minor: using the four-digit code for your department (for example, 2207 restricts to politics majors and minors)
  • Registration Type: new, transfer, returning, etc.
  • Academic Year: A slight variation on academic level, this number is one-half the number of semesters a student has been enrolled. Transfer credits are factored at the rate of 15 credits equaling one semester; AP credits are not counted in this calculation.
  • Special Student: ROTC or Community Scholar students only.
  • Permission of Instructor: used to prevent all students from enrolling via ISIS. Students can add only with a signed course action form and be added manually by someone in your department office. If this restriction is used, it is usually the only restriction on the course.

To Add a Restriction to a Course:
(This is the technical stuff for whomever enters restrictions into ISIS.)
Restrictions are organized into groups defined by group codes. Enter 01 as the group code for the first group of students allowed to enroll in the course, 02 as the group code for the second group of students allowed to enroll, and so on. If more than one type of restriction is applicable to a group of students, both restrictions should be entered on the same line. Restrictions listed on the same line must all be met for the student to enroll. A second group code, 02, is entered when enrollment by a second group should be allowed in addition to those already specified in group 01.

To restrict enrollment by academic level one or academic level two, for example, enter 01 as the group code for both restrictions. The connector between restrictions listed on separate lines but with the same group code is OR.

To restrict enrollment by academic year within a school, enter 01 as the group code and enter the two restrictions on the same line. The connector between restrictions entered on the same line is AND.

To restrict enrollment to students enrolled in two separate schools, enter 01 and the appropriate school code for the first group of students, and 02 and the other school code on the next line. Since the connector between two different group codes is OR, students enrolled in school one OR in school two will meet the restrictions.
