Course continues the review of hypermedia authoring techniques. Courseware development tools presented in the previous course are used to design and implement a complete unit of interactive instruction. Methods underlying design and evaluation of effective interactive software are addressed throughout the course.

Interactive Videodisc Technologies: I. Design and Utilization
Prerequisites: EDES 549, EDES 562, and EDES 760 or permission of instructor
Building on instructional design, video production, and computer skills, this course introduces the use of interactive technologies (computer, videodisc, compact-disc) for instruction. Existing interactive products are examined and design techniques discussed. Students work in small project teams to design, develop, and evaluate a unit of interactive instruction. Due to the nature of interactive development, this is a time-consuming course.

There are four background segments of this course: History, Current Issues, Specializations and Competencies and International Perspectives. These four units have been designed to provide all IT majors with the requisite professional understanding of their discipline's heritage. Following the above, there are units that guide the participants through the exploration of the application of specific media to the instruction process. These will include research on media, selection, utilization and evaluation as well as the relevant characteristics of the media.

Study of sociological theory and research which applies to a systematic analysis of education as its functions in modern society. Selected social and educational problems are discussed to interpret the sociological nature of the educational process and the role of the school as a complex social organization. Interdisciplinary endeavor which consider aesthetics as more than a specialized philosophical study of fine arts, and education as wider than the school or college. Study includes historical and theoretical understandings, cultural and public dimensions of aesthetics and education, psychological considerations, as well as the discipline of various art forms. The seminar surveys the field and analyzes the role of aesthetics in education.

Evaluation of Teaching
Evaluating teaching in worthwhile ways involves understanding: (1) needs and abilities of teachers, (2) tasks teachers must accomplish, (3) environmental effects on teachers, and (4) behaviors demonstrated in teaching. This course examines the independent and interactive effects of these four factors. Heavy emphasis is placed on formative evaluation, or of helping teachers improve via in-class observation and feedback, and on the translation of results of research on teaching into practice. Requirements include various combinations of project work, writing, and tests.

As a prelude to dissertation research, each student conducts a pilot quantitative research study on instructional technology. Prior to enrollment, students must submit a research proposal to the instructor for approval. Students assemble research materials, make arrangements for study participants, conduct the study, analyze the data obtained and write up the research report. Students critique and assist in the research of their colleagues.
