Departmental Degree Requirements
This basic-research-oriented department offers a graduate student a multidisciplinary education in the environmental sciences. This program requires a fundamental background in the physical and biological sciences and in mathematics. Graduate students are expected to obtain an early proficiency in core graduate areas offered by the department and to become accomplished in field and laboratory methods, data analysis and mathematical modeling. These subjects are stressed in many departmental courses and offer a common ground for interdisciplinary communication.
Each graduate student is expected to specialize in at least one of the core areas in which the department excels: ecology, atmospheric sciences, hydrology and geosciences. The department also offers training in environmental chemistry.
