Access for Students with Disabilities   If you have a temporary or permanent disability, special arrangements can and should be made for registration by contacting Brad Holland, Section 504 and Americans With Disabilities Act Coordinator, at (434)924-7819 or (434)982-HEAR (V/TDD). Classroom accessibility is detailed in Building Abbreviations.

Classroom Assignments   Courses have been assigned to classrooms based on the maximum authorized enrollment. Assignments are subject to change based on the final number of students who enroll in the course. Review your schedule on ISIS or check the on-line course offerings for any changes.

Early Graduation   For many years, the University has provided opportunities for students to obtain a degree in fewer than four years in the various Arts and Sciences disciplines by combining credits earned through the Advanced Placement program of the College Entrance Examination Board, credits earned by overload (more than fifteen credits per semester), and attendance in at least one summer session, either here or elsewhere. In recent years, as many as forty-seven students in a graduating class have earned their degrees in three years.

In a typical entering class at the University, 25-33 percent of all students have earned twelve to fifteen credits of Advanced Placement credit and are thus eligible to shorten their time to degree if they wish. Most students now either reduce their course loads or graduate with extra credits. No regulation prohibits students from graduating early, but early graduation from the five undergraduate schools other than the College is rare because the sequencing of courses required for professional degrees commonly requires four years.

Examination Schedule

Grade Reports   Grades can be viewed using ISIS Online. Printed grade reports may also be requested via ISIS.

Interdisciplinary Programs   A number of degree programs are administered by committees rather than departments. The courses that fulfill interdisciplinary major requirements can change each semester; check with your advisor or department for a listing of acceptable courses for the current semester.

International Students   All students attending the University under the F-1 or J-1 non-immigrant visa status are required by regulations of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service to enroll for full-time study in the fall and spring semesters. Full-time study for undergraduates is defined as a minimum of 12 credits; for graduate students, as a minimum of 9 credits. Reduction in course load below these minimums requires prior approval from the International Student and Scholar Programs office in Minor Hall in addition to the approval required by the student's school and department. Any change in visa or citizenship status must be submitted with original documentation to that office.

Non-Resident Status   Students enrolling for the non-resident status (not to be confused with in- or out-of-state tuition rates) should make arrangements to register through their dean's office. Registration cannot be done on ISIS. I.D. cards are deactivated, and non-residents do not receive access to any University service. Non-residents cannot be certified as full-time, including for the purpose of deferring student loans.

Student Health   Immunizations: Virginia law states that all students must submit a pre-entrance health record, including documentation of required immunizations, to the Department of Student Health. The form requesting this information is sent to each student at the time of initial acceptance. For further information, contact Student Health at (434)924-5362.

Insurance: To cover all or part of the medical services that are not covered by the student fee, including those services provided outside of Student Health, students must be insured under the plan sponsored by Student Council or one (your own or a parent's) of comparable benefit. Fees for medical services are the financial responsibility of the student. Failure to document insurance coverage on your Pre-entrance Health Record will result in a block on your course enrollment and registration for the following semester.

Information about the Student Council-sponsored plan is available from Student Health. Please have your insurance information available when you visit Student Health or any other provider of medical care.

Students Studying Overseas   Students who are studying overseas can use ISIS to enroll in courses for the semester following their return only if they are properly recorded as being on leave for the current semester. The date and time of first ISIS access will be e-mailed to the student. The actual advising access code is not needed, as it will be entered into ISIS by UREG (Office of the University Registrar). You may access ISIS directly or arrange to have a friend or parent in the United States add your courses at the appropriate time. If you prefer, you may e-mail a list of desired courses to isis@virginia.edu, fax a list to UREG (Office of the University Registrar) (fax: (434)924-4156), or call the office ((434)924-4122) and have the request processed manually. In any case, the request cannot be processed before the date and time of initial access. Students in the McIntire School of Commerce should arrange to enroll directly with the McIntire School.

University Seminars   University Seminars are designed to increase the opportunities for undergraduate students—particularly first-year students—to learn from distinguished faculty in an environment which encourages rigorous critical thinking, intense interaction, and high-level intellectual discussion. The seminars are typically based on ideas that have changed the way we think about our relation to the world around us. The seminars are given by faculty in departments and schools across the University and carry two credits. Registration priority is given to first-year students; any spaces that remain will be available to second-, third-, and fourth-year students. The maximum enrollment is twenty students in each seminar. Students may select any seminar, including those offered by Architecture, Arts and Sciences, Commerce, Education, Engineering, Law, or Nursing. A link to detailed course descriptions is posted with the course listings.
