The official provider of enrollment and degree certifications for the University of Virginia is Credentials Inc. Certifications can be used for insurance companies, scholarships, military I.D.s, good student discounts, prospective employment, and all other services that require proof of being enrolled at UVa or having received a degree. Each certification that Credentials Inc. supplies is an official University document showing the University Registrar’s signature and the University seal.

It should be noted that all requests for degree or enrollment certification that our office receives will take five to ten business days to process. We strongly encourage taking advantage of the speed and convenience of the Credentials Inc. services.

Students should submit forms for loan deferrals to this office. We will then forward the forms to the National Student Clearinghouse for processing.

  • The charge to have a letter printed and mailed is $3.50 per copy.
  • You can request a standing order and have a confirmation sent automatically each semester to you or a third-party, for a fee of $3.50 per certification per semester.
  • If you prefer, you can contact a Credentials Customer Service operator who will enter your certification request for you, for an additional fee of $5; telephone (847)446-1027.

Loan deferrals are processed by the National Student Clearinghouse:

  • Three times each semester we report the enrollment status of UVa students to the Clearinghouse, which then reports electronically to loan services. Our initial report to the Clearinghouse is within a week of the add deadline; the second report follows the drop deadline.
  • We cannot process a loan deferral for the current semester until after you have completed final registration and your full course load is listed in ISIS.
  • The Clearinghouse processes deferral requests within 48 hours.
  • Don't remember who owns your student loans? Check the Clearinghouse's LoanLocator to see what loans are managed by Clearinghouse participants.

  • You can request a standing order and have certification of your child's enrollment sent automatically each semester to you or a third-party, for a fee of $3.50 per certification per semester.

Diploma Copies
If you need a copy of your diploma for certification purposes, we recommend that you first verify that some other document won't serve the purpose. Usually, companies or government agencies are looking for official proof of graduation, and only in rare cases involving foreign goverments is a diploma copy actually needed. A certification or transcript can be obtained for less cost and in less time; diploma copies cost $50 and require 8-10 weeks to prepare (click here for information on how to order a diploma).

If you do in fact need a copy of your diploma for certification purposes, we recommend that you take your original diploma to a full-service copy center and have an 8.5" x 11" photocopy made. Then, mail that photocopy to the University Registrar's Office and we can certify and notarize it as being a true copy of the original.
