Steve Murphy wins the 2005 Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award in Religious Studies
Creston Davis won the Graduate School of Arts and Science Doctoral Research Award and co-edits "Theology and the Political: The New Debate" with John Milbank and Slavoj Zizek, with an Introduction by Rowan Williams, Duke University Press, 2005. He is also editing "St. Paul and Philosophy" forthcoming with Chicago University Press, is a series editor of New Slant, a new theory and religion book series by Duke University Press. His dissertation will be publish with Duke University Press as "Halos and the Void" with a foreword by Slavoj Zizek.

Gordon Steffy wins a 2003-2004 All-University Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award

Dominck Scarangello awarded Japan Foundation Fellowship and Fulbright-Hayes.

Jann Ronis awarded the Fullbright.

Basit Koshul, PhD Candidate in TEC/SIP, anticpates the publication of his first book with MacMillan/Palgrave entitled Disenchanting Disenchantment.
Beth Rohlman accepts the Fullbright, and the Fullbright-Hayes. Beth also won the 2002-2003 All-University Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award

Peter Slade wins dissertation fellowships from the Louisville Institute for The Study of Protestantism and American Culture, and from the UVa, Center on Religion and Democracy. Peter was also a finalist for the 2004 Seven Society Graduate Fellowship for Superb Teaching

Willis Jenkins recieves a 2004 Raven Society Scholarship for scholarship and service to the University.

Sarah Jacoby awarded the Fulbright, the Fulbright-Hayes and the Blakemore fellowships.

Tom Simpson wins Faculty Senate Fellowship

Daniel Kent and Meritxell Martin-I-Pardo were both finalists for the Seven Society Class of 1958 Creative Teaching Graduate Fellowhip competition. Congratulations to Dan Kent, who took the $5000 prize.


April 2002

Jacquie Bussie has been awarded the 2001-02 All-University Graduate Teaching Assistant Award in Arts and Humanities. Amidst fierce competition Bussie was selected for her strong command of subject, the capacity to inspire students and for her highly developed organizational and teaching skills. This award carries an honorarium of $1000. Ms. Bussie also received the Religious Studies Department's Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award along with a cash prixe of $250.


April 1999

 

The Seven Society, one of The University of Virginia's secret honor societies recently honored departmental teaching assistants Hun Lye, and Michael Thomas. Both Lye and Thomas were nominated for the Seven Society Graduate Fellowship Award. In addition, the Seven Society awarded the $4000 Dr. Frank Finger award for excellence in teaching to TA Michael Thomas.

Z Another secret society, the Z Society, has awarded Religious Studies Professor Larry Bouchard with the Distinguished Faculty Award, given once yearly to a university faculty member who exhibits outstanding teaching and service to students. In 1998 Professor Heather Warren was the recipient of this award, making this the second consecutive year that a member of the faculty of the Department of Religious Studies has been honored.

RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS TEACHING FELLOWSHIP

April 1999

 

Valparaiso University announced recently that J. Michael Utzinger has been appointed as a Lilly Fellow for the academic year 1999-2000 and 2000-2001. Utzinger graduated from VU with distinction in theology and later received a master's of divinity from Yale University. He is currently completing his PhD in Religious Studies at UVa. where he has received numerous fellowships and awards. During the summer of 1997 he was a PEW Younger Scholars Fellow in History at the University of Notre Dame.

The Lilly Fellows Program provides postdoctoral fellowships for teacher-scholars who seek to renew and enrich their intellecutual and spritual lives while preparing for leadership roles in teaching institutions of church-related higher education.

Professor Benjamin C Ray was appointed to the Daniels Family, NEH Distinguished Teaching Chair for a three year term.
