The
Department of Religious Studies is pleased to announce the
establishment of a scholarship fund in the name and to the
memory of Lori Elizabeth Mead, a graduate of the University
with a B.A. in Psychology (1987) and an M.A. in Religious
Studies (1991).
Lori Mead, who passed away in 2000 at the
youthful age of 34, is fondly remembered by the faculty,
by her fellow students and by her many friends in Charlottesville
and beyond. Lori was fascinated by the study of religion
and was a very bright student. She loved the academic environment
of the University, the tranquil beauty of the Grounds, and
the scenic charm of the Charlottesville area. She was a
young woman of winsome personality, ready friendship, and
generous disposition who, in her commitment to the study
of religion, her devotion to the University, and her modest
but always good-natured demeanor, was much admired and appreciated
by those who had the privilege of her acquaintance.
Despite her wonderfully courageous struggle
against breast cancer, Lori was unable to fulfill her cherished
ambition to earn her Ph.D. in religious studies and to pursue
an academic career. It is our hope that the Lori Mead Scholarship
in Religious Studies will not only honor her memory, but
will also assist other students who share her human qualities
and her intellectual interests to pursue their studies at
the University she loved so well. This is a purpose we believe
Lori would have endorsed and supported with great satisfaction.
Contributions to the Lori Mead Memorial Scholarship
in Religious Studies may be sent to the Department of Religious
Studies, Cocke Hall, The University of Virginia, Charlottesville,
VA 22903. Contributions are tax-deductible, and are eligible
for corporate matching gifts. The scholarship fund will
be used exclusively in support of students pursuing graduate
work in religious studies.
