First Year Council and House Councils are two of the excellent opportunities available to first year students at the University of Virginia.

First Year Council is the representative and programming body for the class of 2011. The overarching mission of the First Year is to build a sense of class unity and identity, and to help create a meaningful and enjoyable First Year Experience for members of the class. Leadership roles in First Year Council include President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and seven Committee Chair opportunities.

House Councils provide a structure by which first year students develop and enhance individual leadership skill while learning the principles of self-governance and community development. Each first year dormitory plans programs to bring the residents together, as well as serving those around them. House Councils often partner with other organizations to provide connection within the house and to the first year community as a whole. Leadership opportunities include President, Vice President, Intramural Coordinator, Community Service Coordinator, and Conservation Advocate. Each Council is advised by a House Council Advisor, a member of the Resident Staff.

To be involved with these opportunities, please attend the informational session on Wednesday, August 29, at 7pm in Tuttle Lounge.  By Friday, August 31, you will need to declare your intent to run for either First Year Council representative or a House Council position to your RA by 5pm. House Council elections will take place on Thursday, September 6, and will be coordinated by your House Council Advisor in your residence hall. Those elected as a First Year Council representative will need to attend a First Year Council meeting on Sunday, September 9, at 5pm in Tuttle Lounge. The elections process for the First Year Council executive committee will be discussed at this meeting.

Keep in mind that if you decide not to run for a position in these councils, you are always welcome to be a member of any committee, as well as attending the House Council and First Year Council meetings. Check with your House Council Advisor for more information!

Welcome, Class of 2011!
