Service Programs

We have become partners with two local service organizations, allowing our students a chance to take leadership positions in organizing activities to help other people. We chose these organizations because they have an international component, and they have enough varied needs to take advantage of our students' enthusiasm.

The Center for Global Health:

The CGH was inaugurated at UVA in 2001 and IRC students have been instrumental in the Global Health Scholars selection process. Every year IRC students have been scholarship winners and have undertaken projects in Nigeria, Thailand, Kosovo, Mexico and Korea.

The International Rescue Committee:

The International Rescue Committee is an advocate for refugees from various conflicts around the world. The Charlottesville office resettles refugees in our local area. Every year our students have hosted a Halloween party for about 25 refugee children and their families in Munford Hall. It was a tremendous success and will undoubtedly be repeated in future years. Other activities organized by IRC residents for the International Rescue Committee include a furniture drive and a clothing drive.

Student Governance and Social Programming

The student governance board has a large committee designing social and educational programs: from ethnic cooking classes to yoga lessons, from dances to apple-picking, and from trips to Kings Dominion, Monticello and Washington, D.C. to a Wednesday and Friday international and popular film series in our Munford lounge theater. The student Governance plans various interesting educational and fun lectures including the very popular "The Week That  Was" a Friday afternoon current events review session.

Leadership Programming

We have a 4-day Leadership training program each fall for the elected student leaders of the IRC. In addition, we provide ongoing training and workshops throughout the year to introduce them to leadership theory and practices. Occasionally these programs are open to all residents.
