The first RFA lunch of the new 2018-19 started at noon on Monday, September 10, 2018. Our speaker was the new UVA Director of Athletics, Carla Williams.
Carla Williams was named Virginia’s Director of Athletics last October. She is the first female African-American athletics director at a Power Five conference school and the fifth female athletics director at that level.
Williams comes to Charlottesville with a wealth of athletic and administrative experience at her alma mater, the University of Georgia. She was an All-SEC guard on the Georgia basketball team and helped recruit and coach some of the greatest teams in Georgia’s history. She began her administrative career at Georgia in 2004 as associate athletic director and became deputy director of athletics in 2015 with responsibilities for the day-to-day operations of the department and its $127 million budget.
“Carla,” President Jim Ryan said last fall, “is exceedingly well-prepared” for her role as Virginia’s Director of Athletics, “but more than that, she is fiercely committed to excellence in both athletics and academics and has a track record of success in both arenas.”
Williams made that commitment clear in her introductory remarks at UVA: “Academic achievement, athletic excellence, operating with integrity, a commitment to maximum effort at all times, and a strong sense of teamwork and unity are the core principles that will guide our athletics department under my leadership.”
“My career progression is the result of a commitment to education. Athletics provided the opportunity for me to attend the University of Georgia as a first-generation college student, and my advanced degrees enabled me to further my growth and develop my career as an athletics administrator.”
We had a full lunch starting with a garden green salad with house rolls, chocolate cake for dessert, and a choice of entrées:
- Entrée 1: Oven roasted, wild caught salmon with a fresh herb and cream reduction
- Entrée 2: Chicken breast with a fresh herb and cream reduction
- Vegetarian Entrée: Vegetable pilaf with turnips, parsnips, yellow beets and rutabaga
