The first luncheon of the Retired Faculty Association’s new academic year was held at the Omni Hotel at noon on Tuesday, September 12, 2017. Our speaker was Jon Oliver, UVA Executive Associate Athletics Director, who spoke about “The College Sports World Today.”
Jon Oliver stepped down from his position as executive associate athletic director on September 15, 2017, after sixteen years as second in command in UVA’s athletic department. He plans to remain in Charlottesville while creating his own business as a national consultant to help young leaders in sports. During his tenure as executive associate athletic director, Oliver oversaw the day-to-day operations of the athletic department. He was the administrative liaison for football, men’s basketball and men’s tennis, and he had senior staff administrative oversight responsibilities for academic affairs, equipment room operations, human resources, facilities and game operations, life skills, marketing and promotions, sports medicine, sports nutrition, sports psychology, strength and conditioning and video services. Oliver served as the department’s representative on all major facility projects.
Oliver has also served as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s finance committee, and the NCAA’s minority opportunities and interests committee.
Oliver earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Boise State in 1994 and his law degree from the Idaho School of Law in 1997. Before coming to UVA, he spent six years involved in various aspects of athletic administration at Washington State University, ending his tenure there as athletics director for external affairs.
