Theodore Caplow, Ph.D., LL.D., is Commonwealth Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of Virginia, coming there from a similar position at Columbia University in 1970. Educated at Columbia, Chicago and Minnesota in sociology and economics, he has authored or co-authored 22 books and some 200 research papers. His works have been translated into all of the principal European languages and into Japanese and Chinese. Mr. Caplow has been a visiting professor at the Universities of Bordeaux, Aix-Marseille, Utrecht, Stanford, Puerto Rico, Bogota, Paris, Rome and Oslo. He was chairman of Virginia's Department of Sociology from 1970-1978, and from 1985 to 1987; Director of the Center for Program Effectiveness Studies and later of the University's Medical Mediation Service. He has served as president of the Tocqueville Society, president of the Mendota Research Group and secretary of the American Sociological Association.

His work spans a broad range from abstract social geometry (Two Against One: Coalitions in Trials) to the study of armed conflict (Systems of War and Peace) but has Recently centered on social change. Caplow's American Social Trends, published in 1991, examined changes in the family, education, work, religion, leisure and government between 1960 and 1990, together with trends regarding money, sex, health, intoxication, and social conflict. He was senior author of Recent Social Trends in the United States 1960-1990, a reference book published in the same year, and of The First Measured Century, an inventory and interpretation of American social trends from 1900 to 2000 that appeared in 2001.. The Social Change Report, a quarterly newsletter which he edits, is distributed to more than six thousand opinion-leaders in North America and Europe.
