Italian Mastery & Proficiency Exams

Mastery and Proficiency Exams in Italian are available to graduate students who are required to demonstrate a foreign language proficiency or mastery to satisfy certain degree requirements. PhD students in the History Department: please see requirements below.

The Italian proficiency exam consists of a translation from Italian into English. Use of a dictionary and verb chart are permitted. Students are allowed 120 minutes to complete the translation.

There are no sample exams available, however students should expect a passage written in current, non-technical and non-jargony Italian. Students should not expect to receive a passage directly related to their field of study or the topic of their dissertation.

On the day of the exam, please report to the department office in Wilson Hall Room 115 between 10 am and 12 pm to pick up the exam materials. Students are on their honor to complete the exam within the specified time limit. The department does not provide examples or practice exams. The exam fee is $17 per exam and must be paid when the exam is picked up. Please present a check or money order made payable to the University of Virginia. All materials, including the exam handouts, must be returned on the day of the exam – no later than 4 pm.

Mastery Exams in Italian for PhD Students in History

This is a two hour exam, with the use of a dictionary allowed. The exam consists of:

  • two passages in Italian to be translated into English
  • a passage to be read for comprehension, with five short questions about the content of the passage, to be answered in English
  • a short paragraph on an everyday subject to be written in Italian
