Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese is one of the more active departments within the University, and we encourage students to strengthen their knowledge and love of Hispanic culture by participating in our many activities.

THE SPANISH HOUSE. Since 1980, Casa Bolivar has housed about two dozen students, allowing them with an atmosphere to improve their Spanish (the official language of the house), and to earn one credit in the process. The Casa Bolivar is open to all undergraduates and applications are issued in early Spring. For further information, see Donald Shaw, or check the Spanish House web page.

LA SOCIEDAD HISPANICA, founded in 1980, has over the years provided club members with many extra-curricular opportunities to enrich their knowledge of Hispanic culture and language. It sponsors such activities as Spanish film festivals, musical concerts, poetry readings, and trips abroad. As well as running a student newsletter, La Voz, the society organizes a weekly tertulia, where students and professors meet informally to converse in Spanish.

SIGMA DELTA PI, a national Spanish honor society, is open to all undergraduate and graduate students who have completed at least three years of College Spanish or the equivalent. Admission is based on academic achievement and interest. It holds periodic meetings and hosts lectures by visiting faculty members. The national organization offers fifteen regional scholarships and a fully paid scholarship for summer study in Spain.

MADISON HOUSE. Though a separate organization, Spanish students frequently become involved with their voluntary programs. Knowledge of Spanish makes students ideal participants in such activities as the migrant worker aid program. For further details, consult The Executive Director, Madison House, 170 Rugby Road. Tel. 977-7051.

TERTULIA. Students interested in Spanish are encouraged to form conversation groups, and to advertise them on the departmental majordomo list.

THE SPANISH PLAY. One of the few such organizations in the region, the Spanish Drama Group draws its actors from undergraduates, graduates and faculty, and performs a play each Spring at UVa and other regional campuses. For information, contact Fernando Operé, or check the Spanish Play web page.

CINE CLUB / FILM CLUB. Every Wednesday night at 7:30 pm the Spanish House shows a movie in Spanish with English subtitles. Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to attend as well as faculty and employees of the Univeristy. For more information please contact Ana Isabel Cornide
