Graduate Admissions
To apply for one of the graduate programs in the Department of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, you must submit your online application and materials to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS). GSAS will no longer accept hard copy applications. Information and the necessary forms are here .
Note: The Graduate School of Arts & Science (GSAS), Admissions office will be starting the transition from the CollegeNET application to the Apply Yourself application on August 1, 2009. An online application will not be available from August 1st to August 31st. They will be notifying prospective students on the GSAS webpage as well as sending out an email to all applicants who have an un-submitted CollegeNET application. On September 1st, GSAS will go live with the Apply Yourself application.

Doctorate of Philosophy in Spanish
Please keep in mind that if you are applying to the graduate program in Spanish, you must first apply to the MA program unless you have already completed the MA program at another institution. Students in the MA program in Spanish may continue on to the PhD program upon recommendation from the department faculty.
The required materials for an application to one of our programs do not differ from the requirements stated on the Graduate School Admissions website.
- Complete Online Application
- Final Transcripts from all past schooling
- Official GRE Score
- Two (2) Letters of Recommendation
Both should be from your past schooling institutions. Letters of recommendations must be submitted electronically.
Applicants to the PhD Program:
- A writing sample, in what is not your native language, is required.
International Students
In addition to the materials listed above, the Department of Spanish, Italian & Portuguese requires that you also submit the following:
- Official TOEFL Scores
- Final Transcripts from foreign institutions must be submitted in English or accompanied by an official English translation
