Research Administration Manager

What is a Research Administration Manager (RAM)?

  • New role created as a joint venture between OSP, the School of Medicine, and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) to provide targeted outreach to faculty and administrators
  • Part of a two year pilot program that will be extended if successful

How can we assist Administrators?

  • Work with departmental staff one-on-one or in small groups to educate them in areas such as proposal preparation, how to use Oracle and Discoverer, and how to manage grant dollars
  • Review office processes to improve efficiency and compliance. Work on implementing best practices with departmental staff
  • Be an advocate with the Offices of Sponsored Programs and Grants & Contracts
  • Serve as a resource to answer questions by phone, e-mail, or in person

Areas of Focus

  • Complex proposal preparation (i.e. P or U proposal)
  • Staff training in these areas:
    • Proposal preparation – new, renewal, and continuation
    • Project and Award management
    • Labor Scheduling for proper encumbrancing and effort reporting
    • Award close-out
    • Effort Reporting
    • Financial reporting
    • Pretty much anything related to managing grants at UVA

How can we assist Faculty?

  • Assist with transitioning in of high profile faculty hires for things such as transferring grants, getting labs established and helping them connect with the right people – IRB, OSP, ACUC, EHS
  • Assist faculty in preparation of unusually large or complex proposals
  • Meet with key faculty to hear their concerns/issues
  • Teach faculty how to read their financial reports, either one on one or as a brief presentation at a faculty meeting

What we are NOT

  • Compliance Officers
  • Auditors
  • Spies
  • People trying to catch you doing something wrong to get you into trouble

Our Goal

  • To offer an ounce of prevention instead of trying to find solutions to big problems
