Option to Use New University ID Number When Logging Into ISIS Online

As part of its continuing effort to reduce the use of Social Security numbers (SSNs) at the University, the Department of Information Technology and Communication (ITC) has added a new option to ISIS Online to allow users to log in with their new University ID numbers rather than their ISIS IDs (SSNs for most people).

At the ISIS Online page http://www.virginia.edu/isis, users can select to log in either “By University ID” or “By ISIS ID (SSN).” The default selection is “By University ID”.  Returning users who have already set up a password can continue to use that password with either log-in method. First time users may utilize either ID and should click “First Time Users” to establish a password.

Although users are encouraged to use their University ID numbers, the ISIS ID (SSN) option has been retained to ease the transition.

Although other academic transactions will continue to require the use of SSNs for now, this is intended as one step in the on-going process of decreasing the use – and increasing the protection – of sensitive data at the University.

FAQs: Option to Use New University ID Number When Logging Into ISIS Online

Q. Will the password I last used with my ISIS ID (SSN) work when I log in with my University ID number?
A. Yes.

Q. What’s the new ISIS Online default log-in method?
A. The default log-in method is “By University ID.” To switch, select the radio button next to “By ISIS (SSN).”

Q. Why can’t I get into ISIS Online?
A. Make sure you have selected the right Login Method to match the ID number you are using. You may have keyed in ISIS ID (SSN) where the log-in page is asking for University ID, or vice versa.

Q. What if I get locked out of ISIS Online?
A. The password reset process is unchanged. Once you have established a new password, it can be used with either log-in method.

Q. Why was this change made?
A. This is part of the University’s continuing effort to reduce the use of Social Security numbers (SSNs). This is intended as one step in the on-going process of decreasing the use – and increasing the protection – of sensitive data at the University. For more information see http://www.virginia.edu/ssninitiative.

Q, Does this mean that I don't ever have to give the University my Social Security number?
A. Although we are working hard to minimize the University's need to solicit SSN, you will still need to provide your SSN in some circumstances. Employees must provide SSN for tax reporting purposes and students must provide SSN for most academic transactions, processing of loans, scholarships, and tuition tax credits.

Q. I am still asked for my SSN while trying to transact business with the University. What's going on?
A. While we want everyone to be aware of the problems with divulging SSN, the process of moving away from SSNs and toward University IDs (involving hundreds of systems and millions of records) will take several years. Until this migration is complete please bear with us.
