Flu on-Grounds

UVa students are experiencing a mid-winter surge of influenza.  Student Health has treated 592 cases as of May 1.  Students are reporting high fevers, body aches, headaches, sore throat and cough.  They are quite uncomfortable for 3-5 days.

It is not too late to get a flu shot at Student Health.  It affords protection in 10-12 days and can prevent the flu.

In the meantime, students with fevers, body aches, and cough or sore throat should consider seeking medical care.  Antiviral agents such as Tamiflu can shorten the course of the disease and prevent spread to others.  Students who are ill with flu like symptoms should stay home from classes for at least 24 hours after the fever has resolved and suspend all other outside activities to avoid spreading the infection to others.

Everyone should practice careful cough and hand hygiene.
