Director of
Health Promotion

The Department of Student Health at the University of Virginia seeks candidates to fill the position of Director of Health Promotion.  The director is responsible for oversight and supervision of a very dynamic and innovative health promotion program at a major public university.  Areas of responsibility are listed below.  

Administration and oversight for the Office of Health Promotion.  Supervise three faculty, (Peer Health Education Coordinator, Social Norms Marketing Coordinator, Health Educator/Nutritionist) and one full-time administrative assistant.  Oversee all health promotion and health education activities for the Department of Student Health including the peer health education program (assuring periodic curriculum update and review annual course evaluations), social norms marketing campaign, and community/public health initiatives (including but not limited to: stress reduction, smoking cessation, vaccination campaign, and HIV/STI, mental health, nutrition and substance abuse education programs).  Provide direct patient education services (e.g., smoking cessation consultations) and outreach presentations, workshops and training for students. Periodically evaluate departmental programming and assure effective use of resources.  Conduct annual performance reviews of staff and submit annual report for the Office of Health Promotion to the director. 

Representation of Health Promotion on the Directors Committee in the Department of Student Health and share responsibility for departmental accreditation and other administrative activities.  In collaboration with administrative and clinical faculty and staff (within and outside of the Department of Student Health), develop and implement health promotion/patient education activities. 

Coordination and oversight of public relations and communication activities, patient information materials, and outreach for the Department of Student Health. Responsible for maintaining all Department of Student Health and Office of Health Promotion web sites.  Supervise the production and review of patient education materials/brochures.  Work with University Relations to coordinate press releases and announcements related to Student Health programs and issues.  Coordinate Student Health representation in summer orientation and residence staff training.  Serve as university and community resource for developing and scheduling pertinent outreach activities.

Participation in continuing education and professional development activities in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.  This may include periodic review of new developments in health education methodology, review of pertinent epidemiologic and community health information, attending workshops, serving as an associate editor for peer reviewed journals, preparing course or presentation materials, and supervising interns and students in independent study.

Qualifications: Applicants must have a minimum of a Master’s degree in public health, health education, or a related field, five years of administrative experience in health education or college health, and knowledge of health promotion theory and evaluation.  Preferred skills include leadership and supervision of professional staff; program development and evaluation; collaboration with students, administrative and clinical faculty and staff, and other university professionals; a strong commitment to the educational purposes of student affairs work and health promotion as well as outstanding speaking skills and creativity.  Preferred qualifications include:  CHES certification, and Ph.D. in public health or health education, though not required.

This is a 12-month full-time general faculty position at the University of Virginia with full benefits.  Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience and training.
