Who can have their prescriptions filled at the Student Health Pharmacy?

Students who pay the comprehensive student fee may fill prescriptions at the Student Health Pharmacy.

How do I pay for my prescription?

The Pharmacy accepts:
Credit cards: Master Card/Visa, Discover, American Express
Cash
Checks
Cavalier Advantage

Will I be able to have my prescriptions billed to my Student Account?

No.

Will I be able to use my insurance to help pay for the prescription?

Yes, but only if we participate in your PRESCRIPTION PLAN.  The Pharmacy accepts most plans from the following prescription insurers:

PCS Aetna Wellpoint
PAID Advanced RX Carefirst
NPA Pharmacare RxPrime
Cigna Caremark First Health
Medco Express Scripts Argus
Sentara Anthem Tricare

(Additional Prescription insurers and plans may be added throughout the year)
You may not be familiar with these names. Some health insurance plans have separate insurers for the prescription coverage. For example, if you have Aetna Student Health, then your prescription coverage is through AETNA. Some insurance plans have separate prescription cards. If you are not familiar with your PRESCRIPTION COVERAGE, call your insurance company and ask to speak to a service representative. They can explain your coverage and give you a list of pharmacies that participate with your plan.

If the Pharmacy doesn’t participate with my plan, what can I do?

You may take your prescription to a local participating pharmacy
(check with your insurance plan.)

OR

Save your receipts from the Pharmacy and try to get direct reimbursement from your insurance plan. Not all-insurance plans allow this process. To guarantee that you will be reimbursed, check with your insurance plan before getting your prescription filled.

Will I need to present my prescription card to the pharmacy?

Yes, present the prescription card at the same time you present your prescription. Some insurance plans have separate prescription cards. If your plan does not issue cards to each family member a photocopy is acceptable. The pharmacy does not have access to your medical record, thus is unable to obtain insurance information from the pre-entrance health forms. You may have your parents fax a copy of your prescription card to the pharmacy on the same day you present your prescription. Students that do not have their prescription card when they present the prescription significantly increase the prescription wait times for everyone.

Can I have a prescription from home filled at the Student Health Pharmacy even if my prescription is written by an out of state provider?

Yes, if the pharmacy carries the medication.

Can my doctor from home fax in a prescription to the Student Health Pharmacy?

Yes, the FAX number is 434-243-0182.

Can my doctor from home call in a prescription to the Student Health Pharmacy?

Yes, but only if the provider does not have access to a fax machine.
The Pharmacy’s phone number is 434-924-1544.

If I have a prescription with refills at another pharmacy, can I have it transferred here?

Yes, but only if that pharmacy is not located in Charlottesville.  Because of the large number of requests for prescription transfers and the limited pharmacy staff the pharmacy requires 48 hours to call the pharmacy and process the prescription.

Does the pharmacy have non-prescription medications?

Yes, the pharmacy has a limited selection of non-prescription medications and products. The pharmacy stocks items for the treatment of allergies, cough and cold, skin disorders, pain and fever, acne, and stomach upset. Vitamins, skin care products, contraceptives and some diabetes supplies are also stocked. The medications are located in the lobby of student health in the Atrium Apothecary glass cabinets and available for purchase during regular clinic hours. Insurance does not cover non-prescription medications.
