Influenza, (the Flu) often strikes college campuses during critical times such as midterm or final exams. In addition to students missing important classes and exams, the Flu sometimes leads to other illnesses such as pneumonia, bronchitis, or ear infections. Students may also bring Influenza home to the older members of their family on winter break. Every flu season is different, and influenza infection can affect people differently. Even healthy people can get very sick from the flu and spread it to others.

The vaccine is the most effective means of preventing the Flu.
  • Flu vaccination can keep you from getting sick from flu. Protecting yourself from flu also protects the people around you who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness.
  • Flu vaccination can help protect people who are at greater risk of getting seriously ill from flu, like older adults, people with chronic health conditions and young children (especially infants younger than 6 months old who are too young to get vaccinated).
  • Flu vaccination also may make your illness milder if you do get sick.
  • Flu vaccination can reduce the risk of more serious flu outcomes, like hospitalizations and serious complications.

Students are encouraged to be immunized against influenza annually to prevent an outbreak, which can occur very quickly. Click here for more information on the flu vaccine from the CDC.

Students under age 18 must have their parent's permission to receive vaccines. Please ask your parent or guardian to fill out an immunization consent form and fax it to the number on the form 1-888-265-4199 or bring it with you on October 6. Click here for the form.

There is an alternate flu shot clinic time and location for students enrolled in the School of Medicine (SOM) or School of Nursing (SON). Students in the SOM/SON can receive their mandatory flu vaccine as follows: SOM: Monday, October 2nd, 1pm to 6pm at the Claude Moore Med Ed Building Learning Studio; SON, Friday, October 13, 1pm to 6pm in McLeod Location to be determined. Please check your school emails for details.
