Don't Be Cavalier About The Flu!

2012 IMMUNIZATION and INFLUENZA CLINIC
(Sponsored by University of Virginia Department of Student Health)

Wednesday, October 17, 2012
No appointment necessary -- 10AM to 8PM
Newcomb Hall: Ballroom

Students under age 18 must have their parent's permission to receive vaccines. Please ask your parent or guardian to fill out an immunization consent form and fax it to the number on the form (410-910-1720) or bring it with you on October 17th. Click HERE for the form.

Influenza, (the Flu) often strikes college campuses during critical times such as midterm or final exams. In addition to students missing important classes, sometimes the Flu leads to other illnesses such as pneumonia, bronchitis, or ear infections. And, you could bring Influenza home to the older members of your family on winter break! The vaccine is highly effective in preventing the Flu. Students are encouraged to be immunized against influenza annually to prevent an outbreak, which can occur very quickly. Influenza vaccine is also available in an intranasal form instead of injection. Click HERE for more information on the flu vaccine from the CDC.

Meningococcal and other Required and Recommended Vaccines will be given. Meningococcal Meningitis is a serious and sometimes fatal disease which affects the brain and spinal cord. This disease continues to increase on college campuses. There is a safe and effective vaccine which provides protection against 4 of the 5 types of Meningitis.

Epidemic levels of Whooping Cough (pertussis) are sweeping across the country with a few cases already diagnosed in the Charlottesville area. It is expected that some of you may be exposed in the community. While 70% of the University's undergraduates are already vaccinated with Tdap, others are strongly encouraged to do so at this upcoming vaccination clinic on October 17th. If you have already been vaccinated with Tdap, you do not need to repeat it.

If you would like additional information about the vaccines available at the Immunization Clinic, you may read the Vaccine Information Sheets, available from the Centers for Disease control (CDC). Click on the vaccines below to access the Vaccine Information Sheets.

Don't be BLOCKED from spring registration! Get your pre-entrance immunizations completed on the same day. Please bring your student health vaccination notice letter with you so we will know what you need.
